As you may have noticed, I am not marketing for my senior photography as much these days.
For the past eight months I have been living in southern Mississippi caring for my grandmother and mother. Both suffered strokes as well as other problems in August of last year. Since that time I have moved Avalon to the background of my life to focus my attention to caring for these beautiful women.
My daughter and two of her friends are living in my home, and my fabulous assistant Tracy is working part time to manage the details of reorders and all that needs to be accomplished in the Littleton area. I do visit and may be available for a few shoots this summer, but at this time I do not have any solid dates planned. If you need photographic services before I return, I will be happy to recommend someone.
It is a wonderful opportunity to be in the south for an extended stay. I treasure this time with my family and friends here. While I am here I am taking advantage of expanding my fine art photography. Be on the lookout for our new website to be up shortly!
Other projects include the Heart of the Goddess retreat which I am co-hosting in New Mexico in September. Ladies, there are a few spots still open for this amazing week of growth, healing, and connecting with the goddess within! More details at www.heartofthegoddess.webs.com. For those of you located in the Mississippi area, I’m available by appointment and will also be offering some one-day photographic workshops - details coming soon!
Photographing pets and their owners has always been a passion of mine. The relationships that we build with our beloved four-legged friends is so special and something to be treasured forever. They certainly become one of our family. So often, we attempt to hold memories with clarity in our mind’s eye … and for the extra special things we wish to remember, we take images.
Just over a year ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful dog Maxie, and her owners Terry and Bev. Maxie had caught the eye of my assistant and we invited Maxie to be one of our models to help us promote our new pet photography studio.
Maxie was a dear to work with. You could really tell how she adored Terry and she enjoyed showing off for the camera.
Last month, Maxie unfortunately passed away and this week we are celebrating her life in images.here are some words from Terry and Bev, Maxie's owners from Calypso Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs:
"Our first Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Gus (CH Snowy Mtn Fergus v Calypso), was a pick from a litter in Oregon. He was a beautiful dog with a disposition that made him a great ambassador to the breed. He was bred to a gorgeous imported girl named Emily (CH Emily von Entengas).Out of that breeding we got the foundation for our breeding program, Maxie (CH Calypso’s Gusgal v Maxamillion).
Maxie was a beautiful girl that represented all of the qualities of structure and style that makes Swissies what they were meant to be. On top of that, she got her sire's temperament. Maxie had no enemies, neither man nor beast. She was affectionate to the point of being what we commonly refer to as a 'Velcro' dog. She expecially loved children and small dogs. She knew with whom she should be gentle, and with whom she could romp and play.
As a show dog, she won her Championship before the age of two and then went about establishing her legacy. In two breedings she whelped 18 beautiful puppies. She extended that fabulous temperament to each of her offspring. They are now family members with owners from Connecticut to Oregon.Six of her kids are either Champions or are major pointed, moving toward their titles. Her beauty and charisma are widely known in the Swissies community.
But most of all, she was a beloved member of our family. She was ever present in the household, affectionate, and kind to all who ventured into her presence. She recently crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, the result of complications of bloat. We know in our hearts that she now frolics with the other great dogs that have passed before, and that one day she will again greet us with the love that knows not time nor space.
We were blessed to have her, and we miss her greatly."
Bev and Terry Brown
It's always a joy to see the relationships between dogs and their people ... we’re going to miss you Maxie.
Summer's here once again. Have you ever seen Colorado looking so lush at this time of year? Wow, what weather we've been having! Great for the garden of course, but not so great when you're in the middle of an outdoor shoot and those big black clouds burst!
Busy times here at Avalon. Our new model program has just been launched and we are sifting through applications from 2010 Seniors. It's exciting to see all the enthusiasm out there, and really fun to work with our models, producing great shots they can show to their friends and family! I recently took Monique, one of our models, to Chatfield Park to do some shots by the water there. Her Mom and best friend joined us too so they got to be in some of the images. I just love this one of Monique - talk about capturing the essence of people!
We are getting some of our models together with their friends over the next few weeks to travel downtown Denver and get some cool night shots - can't wait!
Did you happen across an article in the Denver Post a couple of weeks ago about at-home pet euthanasia? The paper interviewed me last month for the article, which featured our own dear dog, Merlin, who passed away last year, and included a beautiful image of him. Here's the article in case you missed it. I'm very much an animal person - at present, I have five cats and a dog living with me and they all have the most wonderful inidividual personalities. It's good fun working here! My daughters obviously have it in their blood too as my youngest is currently studying to be an animal masseur, and my eldest has just adopted a lovely cat named Blackie.
Talking of my daughters - I think they definitely have my creative gene too. Just look at this picnic table they built in my back yard - I guess that's what they call high-altitude dining!
If you're ever around town, do look in at Hero's P.e.t.s. Store on Bowles Ave and Hampden Hall in Englewood - I'm so pleased to tell you that these locations now are displaying some of my artwork. I also got a wonderful surprise last month when Santa Fe Photographic Workshops published one of my photos online and in their latest magazine.
What a month June has been so far - can't wait to see what July has in store!
The Hudson Gardens and Event Center is absolutely one of my favorite places to shoot.
If you've not visited before, it's located in Littleton, not far from Denver, CO. As its website says, it is "an oasis of serenity in the midst of the city where you can stroll, ponder, relax, photograph, imagine, reflect, revel in the beauty, delight in the wonder, and commune with nature."
Every year, Hudson Gardens hold their signature event - a spectacular Mother's Day Champagne Brunch, with over 3,000 visitors in one day! This year, Avalon Photography have teamed up with Hudson Gardens to help you celebrate your family with our special gift to you:
If you purchase any item from Hudson Gardens Gift Shop on Mother's Day (Sunday May 10),
you will receive a gift card which entitles you to a complimentary family or children's session
to be photographed at Hudson Gardens!
Sessions are available thru August 2009 and must be booked by June 10, 2009. There is a limited amount of gift cards available, so visit Hudson Gardens Gift Shop early on Sunday May 10 to make your purchase - once they're gone, they're gone!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful Mother's Day!
A couple of weeks ago, I shot Mackenzie's High School Senior portraits. It was a very windy day! The shoot began at Hudson Gardens in the Hobbit Hole area!
Mackenzie was joined by her cousin Caesare - they were great fun to work with! While they were being silly, I snapped off a few images that turned out to be some of my favorites!
Next stop was downtown Littleton. The wind was really kicking up so we just used it to our advantage. The prom dress was perfect in the alley and the visual impact really lent itself to use the infrared effect. We got some great images in the pink doorway with her and her saxophone, but some of my favorite shots of Mackenzie were the ones of her in her blue dress against the white house.
MacKenzie is a great model and can bring up a variety of looks, with a beautiful expression that really matches the scene. She has a great smile and vibrant personality which shows thru the images. Have a look for yourself - see our video slideshow below or on YouTube and let us know what you think.
Thanks Mackenzie (and Caesare), it was great working with you!
PS Our rescheduled Charity Pet Photography Day is this Saturday, May 2nd at Heros Pets store on Bowles Ave, Littleton. The $30 sitting fee goes to Table Mountain Animal Center. Call us on 303.347.9944 for more details!
Palm Springs, California is a beautiful location for a wedding. When I heard Carol’s wedding would be at the Princes’ home I was so excited. I had met Jack and Avis Prince on an earlier visit to Palm Springs. Being very close friends of the bride they jumped at the opportunity to host her wedding. Their home is spectactular and perfect for such a gathering.
I love photographing weddings. There is so much love among all who attend. Weddings bring out the best in all of us. This wedding was no exception. True love can find us at any age and it is always a joy and an honor to witness to such a great love. These two adore one another and this love and joy of living is reflected in the images - check out our special slideshow of the portraits below or on our new Video Page. Lots of laughter and dancing, and more hugs than one could count! All had a fabulous weekend and I returned back to Denver excited to share the images with everyone.
P.S. Thanks for visiting Avalon's new blog! We have so many new things to share with you.
